I’ve been a big fan of BFGoodrich Tires for some time. Even before I could afford a 4x4 or even a set of tires I dreamed of running BFG All-Terrains on my Bronco/Jeep/Land Cruiser/Scout/Ram Charger/Blazer-whatever 4x4 I would eventually end up with. The vehicle I did end up with was a 1971 Ford Bronco with 28-inch re-treads and it never did receive a set of real BFGs. I’ve spent some time rolling on quite a few BFGoodrich tire models  since those early days, however, and each has lived up to all that I imagined.

The 28-inch re-treads I mentioned weren’t just any tread. They were what I assume was an unlicensed knock-off of the original BFG Mud-Terrain tire tread ( I even compared them side-by-side to a  few rigs I came across in parking lots and they were the spittin’ image). This was my first experience with a BFG-like product and as far as re-treads go, they worked pretty darn well-much thanks to the BFG-esque Mud-Terrain tread, of course.

But to the point, BFG has added quite a few additional sizes to its Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 lineup, including a 42x14.50R20 that’s sure to be a hit with the big tire crowd. The KM2’s original sizes were released in September 2007 and on August 1, 2008 the 285/75R16 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tire will be released with additional sizes following in August and also September.  Once all of the new sizes become available there will 37 KM2 sizes offered.

I’ve only spent a bit of trail and highway time on the KM2 at this point but my impressions have been positive so far. I hope to try out a set in near future and you’re sure to see an article in the magazine about them when I do. So far I like the aggressive Krawler-esque tread and added sidewall protection compared to the original Mud-Terrain and the range of available sizes is really cool. I’m happy to see the standards like 31x10.50R15 up to 35x12.50R15 and the 16-inch and 17-inch fitments are broad, which will appeal to those looking for an aggressive tire for OE or aftermarket wheels.

What BFG says about the Mud-Terrain T/A KM2:

“Inspired by the BFGoodrich Tires Krawler™ T/AKX tire which is the most successful tire in rock-crawling history, BFGoodrich Tires has incorporated Krawler TEK® technology into the BFGoodrich Tires Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 TriGard® sidewall.  Krawler TEK technology consists of three components that dramatically improve the sidewall strength as compared to the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM tire.  These three components consist of: aggressive sidewall lugs, cut- & chip- resistant sidewall compounds and sidewall cords that are up to 33 percent stronger than the previous Mud-Terrain T/A KM tire.  These advancements allow for more bite and sidewall protection along with increased strength and resistance to bruising caused by rocks and rough trails.”
