It's no secret that we like Mickey Thompson tires. The tires are strong, capable, and use a compound that, while they stick to the rocks, still return excellent mileage.
We installed a set of LT285/70R17 MTZs on stock Dodge Ram 17x8" aluminum wheels. The 33" tires fit perfectly on an '08 Ram with no modifications required at all. The MTZ is a mud-terrain tread that will not only work in mild to medium mud situations, but also in the sand, rocks, dirt, and on-pavement. The tread siping looks like it will make these tires snow-beaters as well.

With stock tires, our Ram didn't do well on graded dirt roads and during mild off-roading. The street tread tires would spin and afford no traction. With no other change than the installation of our MTZs, the truck now climbs loose hills and travels dirt roads with ease. It can now also take on some tougher trails with aplomb. The only small negative we can report so far is that the MTZs exhibit a small hum on the pavement at freeway speeds. They run true and took very little weight to balance, so the hum isn't a problem to us at all.
We like the Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTZ tires very much. For someone looking for a great all-around tire, the MTZ should be at or near the top of their list. Once it snows, we'll let you know how they work in the mud and snow, too.
