Extreme Brakes

Vanco hydroboost brakes are the best brake performance upgrade

Over the years, we've tried many solutions to stop our 4x4s that have big tires and lots more weight. Bigger brake boosters and brakes help (of course), but sometimes don't cut the mustard with today's low gearing and high torque rigs that will drive through the brakes in low range. Putting the vehicle in Neutral or disengaging the clutch to go down an obstacle aren't the answers, either, as you don't have needed control in Neutral, especially if things start to go south and you have to drive out of a bind.

A hydroboost braking system is the way to go. Hydroboost brakes have been on diesel trucks for years and have found their way into many 4x4's, too. A Hydroboost is a hydraulically-operated brake booster with master cylinder that not only increases braking power 200-300%, but also decreases pedal pressure needed while doing it! We'd heard stories from some who told us that hydroboosts are touchy and hard to modulate so never considered using one, until we drove the Rubicon YJ Wrangler. Eric Maughan had installed a Vanco Hydroboost system years ago and loved it. After driving his 37-inch tire-shod YJ, we love the brakes, too. The brake pedal effort felt perfect and was easier to modulate (control) than our stock system is. It also provided unbelievable stopping power.

Vanco (www.vancopbs.com) has put together systems for our vehicles that take the guesswork out of installing hydroboosts.  Their systems are installed in many Jeeps and other 4x4s and have proven themselves year after year on the trail.  Vanco also offers upgraded vacuum boosters for those who need better brakes than stock, but don't need the power of a hydroboost system.

I'm a hydroboost convert. In fact, I planned on installing a Vanco hydroboost on my new TJ Unlimited project last Saturday. I decided to wait until I had the RockJock 60s installed along with the 37" tires, so I could give you real-world data on stopping distances with the stock brakes vs. the hydroboost. I'll be back in about four weeks to update this and give you the information. We also plan an installation article in the print magazine.
