Now that we've gotten our cage and center star out of the CV bell, it's time to separate the cage from the star.
The first thing to do is get the cut-off stub out of the center star if it's still there.
The clip will be discarded, so the chosen removal method was to grab part of the clip with some needle-nose pliers and pull hard on the clip. This tweaked the clip and ensured it wouldn't snap back to square one. Once the clip is worked out of the groove, use a punch to tap the axle shaft remnant out of the center star.
Removing the center star from the cage calls for a technique similar to that used to get the cage out of the CV bell.
Turn the star 90 degrees to the cage. Line the ridges up with the cage windows. Rotate the star, searching for the position that allows the star to come out of the cage. You won't have to force anything once you've found the 'sweet spot.'
I found out that it didn't work well to try to remove the center star from the cage while the axle remnant was still inside.
Get rid of the axle remnant first, and then separate the center star from the cage.
Next, we'll clean this thing up, and get it back together.
