The next part of re-assembly is to take the center-star-and-cage combo and re-insert it into the CV bell. You should have the CV bell secured in a soft-jawed vise, or set into a piece of tubing that itself is clamped in a vise.
Take the star and cage and turn them perpendicular to the CV bell. Line the cage windows up with one of the ridges between the grooves in the CV bell. When you find the correct window, the cage will easily slide into the bell, and then you can turn the cage 90 degrees so it is again flat. This is the opposite procedure of what was done to remove the star and cage from the bell.
You can assemble the CV joint dry, but I chose to use some grease to help everything slide and rotate more easily. Be sure your ball-peen hammer and your brass punch are clean, otherwise they'll shake dirt into the grease as you use them during re-assembly.
Rotate the star and cage up far enough to expose one of the cage windows. Place a cleaned ball into the window. Using your brass punch, tap the ball through the window and into its place in the center star. Rotate the cage and star back down.
You can get about three balls installed this way, and then it gets wierd. The balls start to roll the star as you manipulate the cage with the brass punch. The star rotates further than the cage, and it seems as if there's no way to get the balls through the window and settled into the grooves in the center star.
We'll finish tomorrow, with the secret to final assembly explained.
