Here are the final few tips for re-assembling a CV joint.
We've already gotten the cage rotated up far enough to expose one of the windows. At this point, the center star will have rotated up further than the cage.
At first inspection, it appears that there's no way to get the ball successfully into the window and ultimately into the grooves because of the center star's over-roatation.
Here's how to fit the final few balls into the joint:
Place the ball into the window. At this point, you won't be able to push the ball all the way through the window.
With your brass punch, tap the ball downward into the grooves in the CV bell. While you're tapping, the cage and the center star will rotate as needed, and the ball will indeed settle into the grooves.
When you think you're done, take an overall look at the CV joint before you install the axle shaft. Are all six balls in place? Has any dirt or debris worked its way in during re-assembly? This is the time to resolve any issues.
After the final photo was taken, I added the rest of the grease that came in the tube (a pre-measured amount from Toyota) and installed a new CV boot.
