A Better Boot

The Final Steps

Last time, the CV joints had been stripped of their boots, the grease checked, and the new Dorman CV boots slid on.

I was able to slide the boot on far enough that the inner 'tier' of the universal-fit boot went over the CV bell. This meant I didn't need the larger-diameter tier.

Next, I clamped the boot in place at both ends using the hose clamps that came with the Total Chaos kit. After the boot was clamped, I grabbed my trusty utility knife and sliced the boot circumferentially along the molded groove between the larger and smaller tiers.

At this point, the outer CV joints are booted. Re-install the CV shaft by placing the inner CV boot onto the shaft, re-installing the inner tripod joint, and replacing the snap ring that retains the tripod. Slide the inner tripod joint into the outer shell and re-connect the inner CV boot.

Re-assemble the suspension by inserting the outer CV stub into the hub, re-connecting the knuckle to the lower uniball plate, and replacing the tie rod in the knuckle. Put the brake rotor on the hub, and bolt the brake caliper back in place. Clip the ABS sensor wire back into place and secure the ABS wire into its retaining clips. Finally, tighten the hub nut and place the locking collar and cotter pin over the nut to hold its adjustment.

I gave the Dorman boots a short road test, and they didn't leak. In the next few days, I'll subject them to freeway speeds and sessions in the dirt.

I was going to say 'wish me luck.' I don't think I'll need luck. Luck isn't as necessary when you're working with a well-designed, quality product like Dorman Uni-fit CV boots.
