You've heard about the new Goodyear MTR with Kevlar both here and in the magazine. When first introduced, I thought that it was an interesting-looking tire that was probably too much of an all-terrain to work very well in mud and more radical situations.
I've had a chance to use 40x13.50R17LT MTR with Kevlar tires and have changed my mind. When we were mounting and balancing the 40s, a couple of them took quite a bit of weight, although they balanced to zero and were smooth on the pavement. Off-road, the MTR with Kevlar tires work. They work well. In snow, they clear well and afford great traction. In clay mud, no tire clears perfectly, but the MTR with Kevlar cleans out enough to keep the vehicle moving. On the rocks, they're superb. With the Goodyears installed, I was able to climb a steep slickrock dome that I'd never been able to get up before. The Kevlar sidewall evidently lends some stability as well as strength, as the load range C tires felt stable, even when aired down below 8 psi.
It's hard to say whether or not this tire is the greatest, as there are many available today that are fantastic performers It's safe to say, though, that Goodyear has a tire that's among the greatest ever made. They have a winner with the MTR with Kevlar. See more at www.goodyeartires.com. Watch for a more detailed update in the magazine, too.
