So a few of my buddies and I have decided to build a demolition derby car and compete in our local demo event. I have been selected as the driver. Is this really something I want to get myself into? I've done my share of racing but never where the object was to hit and be hit. It's kind of like boxing with big metal fists.
Anyway, what say you, readers? Anyone tried it? Should I try it? Any car building tips? Please advise.
I also have some aprehension about wrecking autos. I like most autos, especially the 70s model vehicles that seem to be the best pick for derbys since they're bigger, have more weight and are made completly (for the most part) of metal. we're looking at mid-to-late 70s 4-door Ford LTDs and Cadillacs. We're not picky though. My buddy who spearheaded this demo build put together the white and pink Crown Vic shown in the pics for a breast cancer awareness 10k. They got 3rd place, which wasn't bad for the first time out and a never-raced-a-thing female driver. Not that females can't drive, of course. . .my wife has a better driving record than I do and is definitely more competitive in a race car. But I'll save that for another post. . .
I will follow up this post with specs on the car we choose to build and build process. And, of course, whether I decide to drive this thing or not.
