Salvage Special II LJ and GR8TOPS

As Salvage Special II, my 2006 LJ with 5.2 Magnum V8 and lots of other cool parts nears completion (it doesn't look like this photo anymore), some thought needed to go into what top to use. It came with both the full hard top, which I think looks a little weird on the TJ Unlimited, and the soft top. Plus, I plan on using the LJ as a real backcountry explorer and need a place to carry more gas on longer trips. A small pickup would be ideal, but I don't own a small pickup and do own a Wrangler Unlimited.

Enter GR8TOPS. For seven years, GR8TOPS has been bringing us quality half tops - including CJ8 Scrambler half cabs and half tops for the CJ, YJ, TJ, and LJ. The tops are high quality, fit perfectly and include a bulkhead to close off the bottom half. After talking with Matt Donaghy, owner of GR8TOPS, I decided their LJ Unlimited Xtended top is the perfect solution to my dilemma. I'll have an enclosed cab that's secure from silty dust, heat, cold, and thieves, yet have a place to carry gas cans, tools, and exploring equipment in back.

Plus, Salvage Special II will still be a hard-core Jeep, able to travel  the toughest trails. How many times when exploring have you seen a two track trail going somewhere, followed it, only to find that it had deteriorated to a trail that only a highly modified vehicle could traverse? It happens all the time to me and having a vehicle that could handle this kind of exploring is important.

The GR8TOPS half cab hardtop will make Salvage Special II much more than it would have been. It will be a Jeep, a pickup, a convertible (yes, GR8TOPS hardtops can be easily removed), a daily driver - pretty much an all-around vehicle. The Mopar tops can even be used if a full top is ever needed again.

Go to www.gr8tops.com and see what Matt offers. It's a GR8 company, building a fine product.

Look for Salvage Special II in 4WD&SU Magazine as soon as it's finished.
