It turns out that a washing machine tub is a magical device that's very adept at fire pit duties.
The porcelain finish is very durable, and very rust-resistant. The perforations in the tub make for superb air supply to the fire. Since the tub has an open top, it's easy to pour the cold ashes (make sure they're cold) into a garbage bag to pack them out with you.
