We rested well after our day in the Bodie Hills. The next day held our trip's conclusion, but not before some more exploring. Two destinations remained: Mammoth Consolidated Mine, and Devil's Postpile.
The Mammoth Consolidated Mine is next to Lake Mary and it's an easy walk from a campground parking lot. "Easy" is a relative term when you're walking around at 7,000-plus feet above sea level. The air's thin here, just as it was in Bodie.
The Mammoth Consolidated Mine is from the 1920's and is remarkably well preserved.
Miners lived in what look like comfy cabins. Check out the "refrigerator," which is a box that's built to protrude into the cool air. Temperatures are cold around here more often than not, so forced refrigeration wouldn't have been needed much of the year. There are plenty of black bears in the area these days, so keeping food hidden is a must! Bears can recognize the shape of a cooler and will tear vehicle doors open to get to them.
As much of a "manly man" reputation as old-time miners have, I was surprised to see this two-seater outhouse. I'm gonna guess it was used one-at-a-time most of the time.
