Monster Valves: How and Where to Drill

The Further Away from the Bead, the Better

For those wondering what happened to the Monster Valves, I'm back at it, and I'll finish this mini-series tonight.

Monster Valves and Mini Monster deflators can be installed with the tire still mounted, but I found out the hard way that it's possible to underestimate just how wide the tire's bead bundle is. On my first three attempts, I nicked the bead bundle. Oops.

What I found out is that the hole should be drilled as far away from the bead as possible. This sounds easy, but remember that you've got to not only drill a hole, but tap that hole once it's drilled. This means you need access for tools.

To place the hole, I used a 3/4-inch transfer punch. This is slightly fatter than the Mini Monster and proved to be a good guide for hole placement.

Once the hole is marked with the transfer punch, you drill the hole in progressive sizes until you reach the final 7/16-inch size.

I've got to go shoot some photos and round up a tech sheet for a feature vehicle.

I'll continue this later tonight.
