It was time to leave the vehicles behind and set out on foot. The Champion Mine has a lower camp and an upper camp. The lower camp was our destination as well as the better-preserved of the two. Unfortunately all but one of the buildings in the upper camp burned in a 1987 fire.
The trail is less than a mile long and rises 1,000 feet or less. We made the climb in less than an hour.
Collette brought along her pre-made meal, stopping to snack as we hiked.
